Realigning Agriculture to Improve Nutrition (RAIN)

The overall goal of this programme is to develop a sustainable model that combines agriculture and nutrition as well as health interventions to effectively prevent child and maternal under-nutrition among rural poor communities. This programme is being implemented in 4 out of the 22 wards in Mumbwa District, and aims to reach 100% of the households with either (a) pregnant and lactating women or (b) a child below the age of 2 years. The project is being implemented in two stages: RAIN and RAIN+. RAIN+ will scale up and develop the successful model developed under the RAIN project to reach a further 6,000 households in new wards. The specific objectives are similar but there will be greater emphasis on women’s empowerment as a critical pathway to improved nutrition, linkages to markets to promote incomes and access to nutritious foods and overall sustainability of the model.
